Dow Saves $4 million with Water Cooling Technology
February 1, 2010 – The Dow Chemical Company and Nalco Company announced that their strategic partnership has resulted in Dow’s largest production site saving over 1 billion gallons of fresh water annually, the equivalent annual usage of 40,000 Americans.
Dow introduced Nalco’s 3D TRASAR Technology into 80 water cooling tower systems at their 5,000 acre Freeport, Texas facility. The technology maintains optimal chemistry for the water used in the cooling systems, drastically reducing the quantity of water needed for cooling and maximizing the efficiency of the process. At the Dow facility, this reduced maintenance has translated into savings of $4 million per year through reduced energy costs, water use and greenhouse gas emissions.
Dow has been working significantly in the past year toward their 2015 sustainability goals, which include offering more products in the renewable energy space and more efficient internal operations. Last October, the company announced the development of a solar shingle – a product which can integrate fully with standard asphalt shingles and is expected to generate $10 billion in revenue by 2020. They also recently launched a carbon capture program at a West Virginia coal plant, which will reduce their annual carbon emissions by 1800 metric tons annually.
