Wal-Mart Designs 1MW Solar Array, Largest To-Date
January 20, 2010 - Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, has recently completed its largest solar power project to date. The array is located at the Apple Valley distribution center and is composed of 5,300 solar panels across 7 acres and will generate over one megawatt of electricity for the company.
The LATimes reports that the power produced by the project is the equivalent of the supply needed by 175 homes, and will supply approximately 20% of the power needed by the company's facility. Earlier this month, Wal-Mart completed three other California-based solar projects in Paramount, Baldwin Park and San Bernardino.
The latest string of solar projects is designed to help Wal-Mart reach its goal of 100% renewable energy use. The company's U.S. solar initiative was launched in 2007, and expanded last year, to include 10 to 20 new solar installations in the next 18 months. In 2009, Wal-Mart also installed the largest solar array at its retail location in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
