New Software Tool Makes Business Case for Green IT
Nov. 24, 2008 - Entuity, a network-management service provider, has released a new software module that quantifies the role of IT equipment in supporting green business initiatives.
The company s Green IT Perspective tool rates and identifies power consumption of physical devices, servers, and workstations across an organization s entire network to give operations personnel the opportunity to efficiently allocate both physical and virtual resources. The tool works in conjunction with Entuity's Eye of the Storm network-management software.
"Green IT initiatives have most commonly been associated with server reduction, but another substantial challenge and opportunity is to recognize carbon footprint improvements across all network-connected elements and devices," says Jim Frey, senior analyst, Enterprise Management Associates. Network managers are in an ideal position to help IT departments find and monitor such resources for green policy compliance. Entuity is bringing value to their customers by both enabling resource (and cost) conservation and meeting demands for sustainable business practices."
The software features a "Shutdown Policy Conformance" function that enables IT departments to monitor which departments are enforcing, and ignoring, the company s computer shutdown policies and their associated costs to the company. The Green IT Perspective can also identify underutilized servers giving IT departments the opportunity to reallocate resources to maximize current inventories, Entuity says.
Whether it be cost concerns or general confusion, a recent report found that 10% of IT execs aren't paying much attention to energy efficiency, while another finds that many still struggle to put thought into action.
